Where is Mtakatyi River Lodge located?
Mtakatyi River Lodge is located in the beautiful Wild Coast region of the Eastern Cape, near Ngqeleni, with access to both the Mtakatyi River and the nearby Indian Ocean. It is situated between Port St. John's in the North and Coffee Bay in the South. It's closer to Hluleka Game Reserve (12 Kms)

We offer comfortable lodge accommodation with well-appointed rooms in a tranquil setting, perfect for fishing trips, weekend getaways, and longer Wild Coast stays. We also offer accommodation in Garden Tents and a Campsite with ablution and outdoor kitchen facilities

Mtakatyi River Lodge is perfectly positioned for guests wanting access to both estuary and ocean fishing. You can enjoy fishing in the river as well as nearby rock and surf fishing along the Wild Coast.
What type of fishing can guests enjoy?
Guests can enjoy river fishing, estuary fishing, rock and surf fishing, and seasonal coastal fishing depending on conditions and the time of year.
Do I need to bring my own fishing gear?
Yes, guests should bring their own rods, reels, tackle, bait, throw nets, prawn pumps and fishing equipment. Mud and swimming prawn are present in the river.
Is the lodge suitable for fishing groups?
Yes, Mtakatyi River Lodge is an excellent option for fishing groups looking for comfortable accommodation close to productive river and ocean fishing spots. Currently we can accommodate a total of 10 x guests in King/Double rooms and another 6 guests in a Dorm room. Alternative accommodation options include 5 x Garden tents (single/double sleeper) and a Camping Site.
How close is the fishing access from the lodge?
The lodge offers convenient access to the river and is well located for guests wanting to fish both inland waters and the nearby coastline. The Lodge offers convenient access to the river, a 1.25 km walk down a road to the boat launch site. A 2 km river boat trip will take you to the Mtakatyi River Mouth offering both popular rock and surf angling spots.
Getting to Mtakatyi River Lodge
Do I need a 4x4 to reach Mtakatyi River Lodge?
A high-clearance vehicle or SUV is recommended, especially during wet weather, as the final stretch of road is rural and may be uneven. Guests wishing to drive to the river boat launch site will require a 4x4 to travel down and up the steep river access road.
Is the Lodge difficult to find?
We provide guests with detailed travel directions before arrival. The route is manageable, but guests should drive carefully on the rural section approaching the Lodge. Livestock including cattle, sheep, goats and pigs are often encountered, including pedestrians, on the route to the Lodge.
Can I travel in a normal sedan vehicle?
In dry conditions (usually South Africa winter months), some guests do travel in standard vehicles, but a vehicle with higher ground clearance is the safer option to reach the Lodge.
Facilities & Guest Experiences
Does the lodge have a swimming pool?
Yes, Guests can enjoy a 35m circular swimming pool with a viewing deck, in a peaceful setting surrounded by the natural beauty of the Wild Coast. We also offer a Swimming Pool Bar and Braai Facilities Check out our Gallery Page to view.
Are there braai facilities?
Yes, 5 x braai facilities are available for guests to enjoy relaxed outdoor meals during their stay. We also have an outdoor Pizza Oven which a popular choice for our Guests.
Is Mtakatyi River Lodge family-friendly?
Yes, the lodge is well suited to families looking for a peaceful Wild Coast break with space to relax and enjoy nature. A swimming pool and Volleyball grass court is available on site at the Lodge. Children can also enjoy river boat rides, river kayaking, snorkeling at the river mouth to view colourful tropical fish (during summer months) and beach swimming and coastal walks.
Is Wi-Fi available?
We strive to ensure FREE Wi-Fi connectivity for our guests for their uninterrupted communication with family, friends and clients (if working), Wi-Fi should normally be available, but due to our remote Lodge location, connectivity can sometimes be limited.
What other activities can guests enjoy?
Besides fishing, guests can relax by the pool, enjoy the river views, explore the coast, take coastal forest and beach walks, birdwatch, and simply unwind in a quiet natural setting.
Is Wi-Fi available?
Wi-Fi may be available, but due to the remote location, connectivity can sometimes be limited.
