DIRECTIONS TO REACH MTAKATYI RIVER LODGE
Nestled deep in the rural Wild Coast of the Eastern Cape, the roads leading to Mtakatyi River Lodge reflect the unspoiled and isolated nature of the region. After travelling on tarred national and regional routes, the final stretch transitions onto gravel and rural access roads that can be uneven, particularly after rain. Due to the lodge’s remote location near the Mtakatyi River and coastline, we strongly recommend the use of a 4x4 vehicle or an SUV with good ground clearance to ensure a comfortable and stress-free arrival. Guests should plan to travel during daylight hours and drive cautiously, as this beautiful part of the Wild Coast remains largely untouched and authentically rural.

EAST LONDON - EC
Step-by-Step Driving Route (East London → Mtakatyi River Lodge
(via Mthatha and Ngqeleni)
1. Start in East London, Eastern Cape
• Head north/north-west on the N2 from East London. This major national road takes you inland toward Umtata (also spelled Mthatha).
2. Continue on the N2 to Umtata (Mthatha)
• Follow the N2 for roughly 220–230 km toward Mthatha — this part of the drive takes about 3–4 hours total without stops.
3. Pass through or around Umtata (Mthatha)
• In Mthatha, stay on the main road toward the R61. Continue through town or follow bypass signs, then take the R61 toward Port St Johns. This road runs east from Umtata.
4. Drive via Ngqeleni
• After leaving Umtata on the R61, you’ll pass areas like Ngqeleni (a small town in the OR Tambo District about 30–40 km southeast of Umtata). There aren’t major highways here — the R61 and regional roads are your main link.
5. Continue east toward Mtakatyi area
• From the R61, look for signage or smaller regional roads leading toward Mtakatyi / Mamolweni AA. This final segment will often move off the main tar roads onto smaller rural roads and possibly gravel sections as you approach the lodge. Mtakatyi is remote and not generally marked as a major highway destination, so use a GPS navigation tool set for Farm 41 Mamolweni AA, Mtakatyi to track the last stretch.
6. Arrive at Mtakatyi River Lodge (Farm 41, Mamolweni AA)
• Follow the navigation directions to Mtakatyi River Lodge location. Roads here are generally narrower and may be gravel, so drive carefully and prepare for rural conditions near the river valley location.
Tips for the Trip:
-
